Main Purpose of Job

The positionfunctions as a Police Pursuit Vehicle Specialist and is responsible for therepair and maintenance of all Police Pursuit vehicles owned by the MarylandState Police, State Fire Marshal's Office and Vehicle Theft Prevention Council.This position maintains vehicles which will at any given time; have to exceedtwice the posted speed limit, in all weather and road conditions. Tis positionensures the safe and reliable operating condition of all Police Pursuitvehicles. The safety of the Trooper as well as the motoring public travelingthe Maryland roadways is critical.

POSITION DUTIES

Replace, repair orrebuild components on MSP vehicles and schedule preventative maintenance.

Diagnose and repairmechanical/electrical malfunctions. Properly install, repair or replaceelectrical police equipment such as emergency lights, sirens and shotgun rackswithin time limits.

Road test vehicles toinsure the safe operating condition.

Perform minor weldingwork, cutting torch work and operate a drill press.

Operate all computer scantools, to diagnose repairs.

Prepare necessarypaperwork on completed repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of theeighth grade.

Experience: Three years ofexperience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles or equipment,one year of which must have involved responsibility for performing majorautomotive repair work.

1. Graduationfrom an accredited vocational/technical high school with amajor in automotive mechanics, or a related field, may be substituted for up tothree years of the required experience.


2.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experienceas a non-commissioned officer in Mechanicclassifications or AutomotiveMaintenance Technician and VehicleMaintenance specialty codes in theMechanic or Maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the requiredexperience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

1)Three years’ experience repairingand maintaining all aspects of an automobile.

2)Current or previous experiencecompleting major repairs to engines, brakes, suspension and electricalsystems.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assignedduties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned suchduties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid inthe State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in thisclassification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance withCode of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

In accordance withSection 2-204 (b) (6) of the Public Safety Article, candidates will be subjectto an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminalbackground investigation to include a polygraph examination before permanentappointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejectionof the candidate.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimumqualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore, it isessential that you provide complete and accurate information on yourapplication. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment EligibleList categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED and QUALIFIED and remaineligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination.The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination willconsist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to therequirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualificationssupplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report allexperience and education that is related to this position.
