Be the difference.Job SummaryThe "Providing Active Labor Support" (PALS) Doula provides non-clinical, full-spectrum doula care services intended to support women in the hospital setting who are in labor and/or may be experiencing a significant or unexpected health-related event. The Doula will collaborate with nurses, midwives, and physicians to identify program participants and to inform patient care plan with the goal to improve outcomes, positively impact the patient experience, and achieve patient goals. As a member of the healthcare team, the PALS Doula provides culturally-sensitive support and serves as a mentor and health coach to promote positive birth experience, breastfeeding, parent-infant attachment, and healthy coping skills. While establishing a trusting relationship with expectant mothers, the PALS doula provides active labor support and individualized interventions to support the patient's experience on labor and delivery. The Doula will focus especially on birthing support by providing emotional and educational support. The PALs Doula uses motivational interviewing skills to assess motivation for change and assists patient set and obtain goals to reduce risks for pregnancy-related complications. The Doula facilitates coordination and promotes successful linkage to resources. The PALS Doula also serves as a patient advocate for patients they support and integrates with hospital staff to reduce stigma.
The labor and delivery setting requires staff to be scheduled for a significant amount of shift, weekend, holiday and on-call work. The position may regularly require extended shifts.
This position is grant funded.
AccountabilitiesProvide doula services in the labor and delivery and postpartum hospital setting. 25%
Offer peer support to patient and family and connect to community-based resources. 25%
Collaborate with multidisciplinary care team to identify program participants and to assist in developing individualized care plan. 25%
Serve as a patient advocate and integrate with hospital staff to reduce stigma. 10%
Attend required staff meetings and complete required documentation from births and patient interactions. 10%
May be required to visit homes of postnatal patients. 5%
Minimum RequirementsThis is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
Minimum RequirementsHigh School diploma or equivalent OR highest degree earned
No Previous Experience Required.Doula or birth coach experience preferred. Experience working with pregnant mothers is preferred.
Other Required Skills And ExperienceSuccessful completion of community-based doula training certificate program through Birth Matters required after hire.
