Why did Y: The Last Man get cancelled? ›

In January 2022, Clark revealed that the series was permanently canceled as it failed to find a new network. In February 2022, FX Chairman John Landgraf referred to a "really steep decline" in viewership over the course of the show's run as the reason for its cancellation.

Y: The Last Man is officially not returning for a second season. After being taken off FX on Hulu's slate of content, the series was looking around for a new home network. Unfortunately, it was not picked up and will not be returning to tell more of its story.

The plague. The source of the plague that wiped out every living mammal with a Y chromosome except Yorick Brown, Ampersand, and Doctor Matsumori is never fully explained. A number of possible explanations are provided throughout the course of the series, but a definitive answer is left for the reader to decide.

It is suggested in Y: The Last Man #30 that Ampersand is a genetic mutation, and his feces are actually the reason he and Yorick survived the Plague. Issue 60 shows an aged Ampersand during a flashback during Yorick's visit to Agent 355's grave.

The true cause is this: The Dreamtime changed, which caused males to die across the Earth. More specifically, Yorick's Earth is one of the many Earths under the domain of the Endless, including Dream and Death, and a change in Dream's realm unleashed the plague on Yorick's Earth.

It earned generally positive reviews and even got a major fan in Stephen King. However, Y: The Last Man was then abruptly canceled before season 1 even finished airing all its episodes. Showrunner Eliza Clark stated her commitment to finding a new home at the time.
