You’ve probably heard the term kink or BDSM before, but like many of us, you probably don’t know what it really means or stands for. Maybe you watched 50 Shades of Grey or read an erotica or two and know a little about what BDSM is.

But it’s okay to say you’re also terrified by it. Is BDSM pleasure or pain? And how can you really try it out for yourself? We spoke to a few professionals to answer all your burning questions below and recommend products worth buying for first timers.

What is BDSM?

BDSM stands for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. But more than just that—it’s “a psychological space where you can consensually explore some of your most complex desires,” says Mistress Eve, a Professional Dominatrix based in New York City. “BDSM is about allowing yourself to take comfort in power exchange, curiosity and vulnerability.”

Do pain and BDSM go hand in hand?

One of the biggest misconceptions about BDSM is that it always involves some degree of pain.

“I think we have this idea that BDSM has to be very intense and scary,” says Zachary Zane, author of Boyslu*t: A Memoir and Manifesto and sex expert for Archer, a new dating app for queer men. “But BDSM can be fun and lighthearted, too. It doesn't have to be this scary thing.” As long as you remember to communicate your feelings and desires while engaging in BDSM, it’s an entirely pleasurable experience.”

“Role-playing, power dynamics, restraint, temperature play can all be purely pleasurable with no pain involved,” says Natassia Miller, a Brazilian sexologist and founder of sexual wellness company Wonderlust. “For me, BDSM represents liberation. It's roleplaying, being vulnerable, communicating clearly and being open to exploring without judgment.”

Curious for more? For those of you looking to ease into the world of BDSM, we’ve rounded up the best products below, all picked by sex experts.
