Guide for Baldur's Gate 3 (2024)

Welcome to Baldur's Gate 3, the game took 2023 by storm! Baldur's Gate 3 is a turn-based RPG centered in the D&D mythos. This guide has been made in mind with this possibly being a lot of people's introduction to D&D type mechanics. There are a total of 54 achievements and 46 of these are missable. There is no DLC and the developers have confirmed that no DLC will be made. All said and done, this completion will take either one or two playthroughs. Depending on how which route you go this will probably take you 80 - 120 hours of playtime. For the general player, I would recommend splitting this completion across two playthroughs, which is the foundation of this walkthrough. I know some people may want to try the "one playthrough" route, so in the first playthrough sections I have included notes for such players. Primarily, there are two main points of failure if you try a single-playthrough completion.

Endings:

The ending achievements put a completionist in an awkward spot. There are three achievements tied to an ending choice dialogue:

  • Ending A
  • Ending B
  • Ending C

Ending C is tied to a specifically to the "Dark Urge" origin that is selected at the character creation. You then have to make a specific choice during an Act 3 boss. This unlocks the option to get ending C, but it replaces the spot of ending B. Things get complicated further by there being an achievement for completing the game on Honor mode. The Honor mode difficulty brings new mechanics to bosses, is game over if your whole party dies, and most importantly you can't reload your saves outside of "continuing".

This means no reloading previous saves.

This makes it so you can't easily save scum, the operative word there being "easily". For those that are familiar with cloud save management, then it is perfectly possible to 100% this in one go if you follow this guide's notes. Disclaimer: I will not be covering how to manage cloud saves as that is not something I am well versed on myself, so that will be on individuals to handle themselves. All I can do is point out the key points and things to be mindful of.

Save the Tieflings:

There is an achievement to save every Tiefling refugee, which on a normal playthrough isn't too complicated. The trick is, when paired with playing as the "Dark Urge" origin, one of these Tieflings has a scripted death scene. Fortunately, there is a way to mitigate this by taking advantage of a game mechanic and then ending your day at a specific location to force an event to happen.

Due to the above potential points of failure, I've opted to write this as a two-playthrough completion, but have it listed as only being "one playthrough required". Again, I'll provide the information and steps for those who want to try the challenge of a single playthrough throughout the first playthrough sections. For those of you leaning towards two playthroughs, here is a high level breakdown of what we'll be going for across them:

  • Playthrough 1 (Achievement Playthrough) - Will focus on getting 50/54 achievements and the recommended difficulty will be playing on "Balanced". This will serve to acclimate you to the game's mechanics and gameplay, while also getting all of the achievements not tied to a specific origin story or difficulty. Footnotes will be included where relevant for the four covered in playthrough 2.
  • Playthrough 2 (Dark Urge and Honor Mode playthrough) - This will focus on getting both of the Dark Urge origin-related achievements and the Tactician/Honor mode difficulty achievements. This will be played on "Honor" mode as unlocking that will also unlock the Tactician difficulty achievement as well.

That's it for the Overview! This is my first time writing a walkthrough, so I hope it is sufficient to guide you through this completion.
