How many geese should be kept together? ›

For row crops, two to four geese per acre are typically sufficient when placed when the first grass appears. No more than four geese per acre should be used.

The most popular breeds for small flocks are Embden, Toulouse, African, Chinese, and Pilgrim. The utility strains of Toulouse geese have been bred for their ability to gain weight rapidly. In the past, goose fat was a primary source of cooking fat and lubricants.

Domestic geese usually do not fly much, and flying is most likely to occur in the lighter breeds or with younger birds. Once you have chosen your breed it is worth seeking out other keepers and finding out if they have problems with geese flying out of their enclosure, and what their fencing solutions are.

Geese can be housed with chickens, but young goslings cannot be raised with chicks. While it is okay for geese to share the same coop as your flock of chickens, the coop may need some modifications to accommodate the geese. Geese don't roost on perches and they rarely use nesting boxes.
